In order to catch up with the popularity of the Nikon D300, digital imaging and photography giant Canon broke away from its tradition of creating upgrades to its line of cameras every 18 months by releasing the Canon EOS 50D only a year after the EOS 40D hit the market. The move paid off, as the release of the 50D somewhat affected the sales of its Nikon rival.

On the outside, there’s nothing exceptionally new about the Canon EOS 50D, except for the new silver bezel on the device’s mode dial, and a few buttons rearranged and reprogrammed here and there. But body-wise, the 40D and 50D are quite similar.

The inside of the Canon EOS 50D is where the magic happens, so to speak. The 50D now comes with a 15.1-megapixel sensor, a major upgrade from the 40D’s 10 megapixel capabilities. This has led to the 50D featuring a new and wider set of ISO settings guaranteed to please even the most fickle photographers.
